In A Bid to Expand its Operations: Discovery Education Acquires DoodleLearning

D DoodleLearning was purchased by Discovery Education in an effort to expand its presence in the United Kingdom. The acquisition comes four months after the purchase of Spiral, an interactive learning platform, in July 2020, and Mystery Science four months later.

DoodleLearning has served over one million children aged 4 to 14 in the UK and internationally with four products that provide "supporting instruction" in math and English. Minor and Chilman, both math teachers, created DoodleLearning as an app in 2011 to "encourage children to learn in an engaging way."

According to sources, Discovery Education's purchase of DoodleLearning provides it with a key insight into the UK market, while supercharging its maths and English offerings with the UK company's personalised learning experiences that help improve students' academic achievement and confidence.

Discovery Education CEO Scott Kinney described the acquisition as a "significant milestone" in a statement. "Our team will naturally fit into Discovery Education's mission-driven culture," he told the press, adding, "and we look forward to working with our new colleagues on our joint mission."

Tom Minor, COO and DoodleLearning's other co-founder, also spoke to the press in response to the acquisition. He said, “The company has laid out exciting plans to increase the number of instructional minutes it supports each day, and DoodleLearning is poised to play a significant role in this effort.”

Speaking to the media, a member of the DoodleLearning team said that they are excited to join Discovery Education's efforts to build and scale a powerful EdTech ecosystem of digital resources that will serve teachers and learners worldwide.
