In partnership with the Information Technology Industry Council, Morehouse College Launch New Center for Broadening Participation in Computing

M Morehouse College, the nation's only historically Black liberal arts college, and the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) are working together; to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the technology ecosystem by establishing a new Center for Broadening Participation in Computing (CBPC).

The CBPC, based at Morehouse College, will be an academic-industry collaboration helping underrepresented students prepare for careers in technology while developing strategies to make the tech ecosystem more equitable and innovative for people of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

An Innovation Advisory Board (IAB) of technology experts will advise the CBPC on how to raise STEM education across the country, expand degree programmes, and serve as an industry resource for best practices in recruiting and training students of colour.

…the Center for Broadening Participation in Computing will help ensure that people of colour continue to be the drivers of ingenuity they have always been, especially as we navigate the boundaryless open range of the scientific and technological frontier…

Strategic alliances with institutions like Carnegie Mellon Universities, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Georgia Institute of Technology will provide students with opportunities and training from top-ranked computer science programmes.

Through their Brilliant Black Minds programme, a collaboration with tech start-up Karat will allow for several free practice technical interviews. Through a partnership with Coursera, Morehouse students have access to over 3,000 courses in business, technology, and data science from leading universities and companies.

Speaking about the new centre, David A. Thomas, PhD, president of Morehouse College, told the press, "The Center for Broadening Participation in Computing will help ensure that people of colour continue to be the drivers of ingenuity they have always been, especially as we navigate the boundaryless open range of the scientific and technological frontier." He ended by saying, “A cutting-edge STEM education, infused with a top-tier liberal arts foundation and close engagement with leaders in the field, will provide talented students with a one-of-a-kind experience that will make them uniquely prepared to be global leaders of innovation.”
