John Deere and Iowa State University: Open New Demonstration Farm to Aid Farmers in Sustainability

J John Deere & Company and Iowa State University (ISU) have collaborated to create a demonstration site with four distinct fields and procedures that will allow Deere to test sustainable large-scale grain production system solutions in practical settings.

Farmers can't afford to adopt experimental practices that aren't proven to produce the yield they expect because they operate in constantly changing environments where every choice will affect their final product.

The demonstration farm, in partnership with ISU, enables farmers to experience the same ambiguities and challenges as our customers, allowing us to test and determine which approaches are effective and provide farmers with tried-and-true, cutting-edge, and sustainable solutions, claims Jill Sanchez, Director of Sustainability at John Deere.

…the demonstration farm will offer Deere and ISU significant opportunities for employee and student education, dealer and customer outreach, and equipment demonstrations in addition to enabling them to demonstrate the effectiveness of sustainable practices at scale…

Deere and ISU will be able to test sustainable farming methods in actual farming situations and learn from their successes and failures by doing so on the 80-acre demonstration farm. Four different crop production systems will be put into place over a five-year production cycle. Crop productivity, production costs economically, soil health, water quality, carbon intensity, and biodiversity will all be measured using the information gathered.

The demonstration farm will offer Deere and ISU significant opportunities for employee and student education, dealer and customer outreach, and equipment demonstrations in addition to enabling them to demonstrate the effectiveness of sustainable practices at scale. This collaboration expands on Deere's Leap Ambitions, a set of targeted objectives created to increase customers' economic value and sustainability by making every hour, drop, seed, pound, and pass matter in order to maximise operations.
