NZ Centre to Continue Collaboration with Peking University after Signing MoU Extension

T The New Zealand Centre at Peking University is set to extend its successful international education collaboration by renewing its memorandum of understanding with all eight New Zealand universities. At a ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the agreement's signing, a MoU was signed on July 27, 2022 at the Beehive in New Zealand's parliament.

The signing of the MoU was a "privilege," according to Jan Thomas, vice-chancellor of Massey University and chair of Universities New Zealand. "It is a measure of the important role the New Zealand Centre plays, and the esteem in which Peking University is held, that this renewed MoU signing and previous such occasions have been high-profile events involving government ministers from both countries," he added.

…the Centre has gone from strength to strength during its first 15 years and with this renewed MoU we look forward to it continuing to do so…

The New Zealand Centre was established in 2007 with the goal of promoting academic exchange between China and New Zealand, strengthening ties between the two nations, and fostering cooperation among academic institutions.

The other seven New Zealand universities all joined the Centre by 2014, and the first Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 2016. The Centre was initially a partnership with the University of Auckland.

Alister Jones, senior deputy vice-chancellor of Waikato University and chair of the New Zealand Advisory Board of the New Zealand Centre speaking with the media said, “The Centre has gone from strength to strength during its first 15 years and with this renewed MoU we look forward to it continuing to do so.”

Thomas emphasised in a LinkedIn post about the occasion that beginning on August 1 all visa processing for foreign students will resume in New Zealand.
