UGC Partners with Global Universities to Offer Twin Courses

T The University Grants Commission is on a mission to scale up tie-ups between foreign and Indian universities. To collaborate with institutions in USA, Europe, and East Asia, the UGC has reached out to foreign missions in India.

UGC Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar told the press, “We have sent them (foreign institutions) a list of eligible Indian universities with whom MoU’s can be signed. We have not written to any universities in China although some of their universities fulfil the eligibility criteria."

According to sources, the UGC will hold meetings with 500 global universities coaxing them to partner on the project. The project will kick off in the 2022-23 academic year and includes twinning programs, joint degree and dual degree programmes.

Via an April 2022 notification, the University Grants Commission set conditions that universities abroad willing to collaborate must rank in the top 1000 in either the Times Higher Education (THE) or QS rankings. Partner Indian universities must be ranked in the top 100 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework or have a minimum score of 3.01 from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. The UGC Chairman Prof. Kumar updated the press that plans for foreign universities to open campuses in India were in the final stages. He also added that the proposal for top Indian institutions such as IIT on foreign shores is also in motion.
