Waterbury Public Schools Collaborates with BloomBoard to Address the Teacher Shortage

W Waterbury Public Schools and BloomBoard have joined forces to create Waterbury U, a programme aimed at addressing the current teacher retention crisis. The programme provides teachers with on-the-job professional learning opportunities in order to prepare, promote, and advance them in their careers.

Educators can earn graduate credit through the programme, which can lead to a full master's degree and salary advancement. Moreover, Waterbury Public Schools will cover all participation costs for up to 800 staff members.

Dr. Verna Ruffin, Superintendent of Waterbury Public Schools, expressed her thoughts on the new university, saying, "I see BloomBoard as a partner in helping us grow our own talent, including the number of paraprofessionals who aspire to become teachers or who aspire to be better paraprofessionals." A successful student requires an effective and happy teacher. As a result, supporting teachers through Waterbury U is critical to meeting the diverse needs of all students."

Based on a recent CT Insider article, Connecticut currently has 1,200 to 1,600 open teaching positions. As a result, this programme aims to provide a special incentive for current education staff to remain in the district while also encouraging new teachers and staff to join the school community.
