Philadelphia Schools: Heading Back to Normal

All Philadelphia Public Schools opened their doors for in-person learning amidst opposition from some education leaders. Monica Lewis, spokesperson for the school district said that the district “firmly believes that in-person learning is best for our students.” Fall in the number of staff and the general well-being of the students and school staff were some of the main reasons why some education leaders were none too sure about the decision. The return to in-person learning will now be handled with stricter safety protocols.

Japan Faces Backlash over Overseas Students Entry Timeline

With the COVID-19 pandemic around, it's safe to say that the education sector is one such sector that has taken many hits. The pandemic brought in many restrictions, the biggest one – travel. Overseas students studying in Japanese universities are finding it difficult to enter and re-enter Japan as currently the government of Japan is yet to give a clear picture of the entry timeline. The government continues to face backlash as overseas students are stuck in limbo, with no definite timeline to re-enter “as soon as possible”, in sight.

US Education Department: Announces New Grants

The US Education Department recently announced new grants under the American Rescue Plan to support colleges and universities' needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many community colleges and rural higher education institutions faced setbacks such as low enrollment, students unable to meet basic needs, to name a few. These institutions have a higher percentage of low-income students, and new grants will help solve these setbacks.

Arab League: New Initiatives for Arab-Specific Universities

At the 18th Conference of Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Arab World, organised by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) in Algeria, several new initiatives to improve research and to enhance the quality of education were approved. Improvement in the quality of research in the field of technology, culture, society and economy is expected to bring about quality education and healthy competition.

Arizona State University's $25m initiative to reach 100m learners

Arizona State University has recently announced their $25m online initiative to be carried out by the university’s Thunderbird School of Global Management. The accredited online Global Management and Entrepreneurship Certificate will help students in developing countries with basic business skills. The programme was created with the aim to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education. The aim is to reach 100m learners by the year 2030.

Turkey to Bring in More African Students to its Universities

The recent third Turkey–Africa summit brought good news for African students as now the Turkish government will work towards attracting more African students to its universities. Also, it was decided that, beginning in 2023, the African students can get into the majority of degree programs with a high school certificate.

New Zealand: A Major Reform of its Vocational Education System

At the recently held Asia Pacific Technical and Vocational Education Forum (APAC TVET), organised by Education New Zealand, Skills Consulting Group — the country’s largest private sector vocational education consultancy, and Te Pūkenga, New Zealand’s new national institution for Vocational Education and Training, New Zealand undertook a major reform of its vocational education system.
